Jody Davis, co-owner of The Girls Coffee Bar in Fernvale, spills the coffee beans about making quality coffee and serving it with a smile.
Nestled in amongst the shops along the Brisbane Valley Highway in Fernvale, Queensland you’ll find The Girls Coffee Bar. Outside, a couple of gents and their pet dogs are seated in the outdoor chairs, soaking up the winter sun and sipping on their coffees. As I walk in co-owner Jody Davis is behind the counter, perfecting a freshly brewed coffee for a lady who is taking some time out and flipping through a magazine. The smell of freshly baked bread wafts through the air and the aroma of coffee brewing lingers. I’m not generally a coffee drinker, but this place smells so good that, for today, I think I will have to make an exception. I sat down with co-owner Jody Davis over the most delicious drop of coffee to chat about the café, the coffee and The Girls Coffee Bar in Fernvale.
DESCRIBE THE GIRLS COFFEE BAR IN FERNVALE
The Girls Coffee Bar is a café located on the Brisbane Valley Highway in Fernvale, Queensland that specialises in high quality coffee and hand-made cuisine.
WHAT MAKES THE GIRLS COFFEE BAR IN FERNVALE UNIQUE?
Firstly, our coffee. We only use very high-quality coffee beans which we import from Melbourne. Secondly, our baristas. We go to great lengths to train our staff on how to make the perfect brew. Thirdly, our food. Everything we serve is made here in house from scratch. We don’t believe in packet mixes and pre-made food. I’m a chef by trade, so take great pride in delivering a menu full of authentic home-cooked country cuisine.
WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT WORKING AT THE GIRLS COFFEE BAR IN FERNVALE?
It depends who you’re asking. For our staff, it’s probably the 25% discount! For me, I just love coffee… I love making it, I love talking about it with my customers and I love drinking it!
OTHER THAN YOUR LOVE FOR COFFEE, WHAT ELSE INSPIRED THE GIRLS COFFEE BAR IN FERNVALE?
I’m a chef by trade, and serving food that has been created from scratch is really important to me. I’m a country girl and like most country girls, I was taught to cook by my mother, and she was taught to cook by my grandmother. There was no packet mixes in my house growing up, just good old fashioned ingredients. If you wanted a cake, you had to cream the butter and sugar yourself and there was no cutting corners. When we opened The Girls, it was a no brainer for me that we would only serve authentically prepared food, like what I grew up with. We make all our own sweets in house, our own bread and even our own meat products like the hamburger patties and chicken patties. We also have a range of home-made preserves which we sell and our customers love our range of gourmet chutneys, jams, syrups and sauces. Everything we serve whether it be our coffee or our food, has its own The Girls stamp on it, it’s our point of difference.
WHO ARE YOU CUSTOMERS?
We welcome all customers! On weekends and holidays, we welcome a lot of visitors to the region. We like to think we are offering tourists a taste of the country and good old fashioned friendly country hospitality. On weekdays, we see a lot of business people and tradies. To make it easier for people in a hurry, we have introduced a service where our customers can place their orders via text on their mobile phones. We also have a dedicated tradie menu, which is full of great value options that don’t take too long to prepare. During the week we also welcome a variety of people from visitors to locals who are just after a good cup of coffee and something nice to eat in a cheerful and relaxing place.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT SOMERSET?
What’s not to love? There’s so much to do and it’s all on our doorstep. There’s the dams, creeks, great camping spots, 4WD tracks, bush walking tracks and a spectacular landscape that’s there to explore. We’re so lucky that we’ve got the best of the great Australian outdoors right here in Somerset. In my spare time, I love getting outdoors and I dabble in still photography and drone photography. With it’s unreal scenery, Somerset is a photographer’s paradise.
