The Somerset Regional Art Gallery – The Condensery is situated in the small town rich in country hospitality, Toogoolawah.
A magnificent structure, rebuilt and restored to its original glory, Somerset Regional Art Gallery – The Condensery is certainly hard to miss. This building is known to many as the cultural footprint for Somerset providing visitors and locals the opportunity to lose themselves amongst the gallery walls, enjoy the award winning architectural elements and learn about its unique history.
WHAT’S IN A NAME
The building was not always a cultural hub for Somerset, its original purpose was to create and distribute condensed milk to places like Ipswich and Brisbane in a time when fresh milk would spoil on the road easily. The building you see today was first built in 1898 by a local family who still reside in the area today. This factory provided jobs to those willing to travel and settle in the area which eventually lead to the town being built. To honour its heritage the art gallery was named the Somerset Regional Art Gallery – The Condensery.
Amongst other history elements, the building still houses the original bomb shelter first created for safety during the war. The shelter is now used as a history room, ready to indulge any history buff willing.
